Research - Survey Analysis

Research into Target Audience

The demographic of my audience is males between the ages of 16 and 18, of both genders. This is because these were the people who said that they would pay to see a horror film at the cinema. 50% of these men went less that once a month, 25% went once a month and the last 25% went once a week.

Knowing that this is my target audience helps because it helps me to know what certificate it needs to have in order to be viewable by my target audience; once I know what certificate it is, I can work using the guidelines for that certificate (the guidelines will be included at the bottom of this post). In this case, the film would have to rated a 15 in order to be able to be seen by those of my target audience who are 16 and 17 year old.

When answering what would make a horror film appealing, 50% mentioned a good story/plot, with 25% mentioning the psychological aspect. Again, these were the most frequent answers.

Knowing this will help me because it not only helped me to realise how important the plot was to a horror film and also helps me to understand what exactly would make it a plot: a plot designed to scare you psychologically, rather than physically.

In the question 'The things people enjoyed most about horror films', 75% mentioned suspense/tension, 50% people mentioned things that make you jump, and 25% mentioned gore. These were most frequently mentioned things.

Knowing this will help me because suspense and tension being mentioned by so many people corroborates the psychological plot mentioned by people in the other question. Suspense and tension can be used to make the film psychologically scary.

British Board of Film Classification

Suitable only for 15 years and over

No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

Discrimination

The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest  terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex

Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely  to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme

No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.
